Many people ask me what I’ve been working on since I sold The Dome Retreat, with my usual response being to speak a little about the latest exciting Spa project that Spa Solutions is working on. Upon reflecting on the past year, however, two things predominantly stand out to me. I’d like to share these with you.
One is the privilege we have in contributing to exceptional projects, through creating Spas that embrace their unique environment; such as the remote tropics or World Heritage rainforests. I thrive on the creative challenges arising from the provision of effective solutions to design, construction and operational issues - solutions that give our clients Spas that are inspiring, within budget and operationally seamless.
Last year we had the pleasure of working on the creation and development of some wonderful Spa projects, such as the Cairns International Spa and Balé in Port Douglas.
Currently we are working on many exciting new ventures such as a new $5 million Conference and Spa development in the Queensland Lamington World Heritage rainforest, a Spa for elite athletes just north of Sydney, a wellness resort north-west of Melbourne, a thermal springs resort on the Great Ocean Road and two spas in Mackay: one a South Pacific themed Spa; and the other a lifestyle and wellness Spa.
2008 will be a progressive year for the Spa industry, both structurally and systematically as we continue to open state-of-the-art Spas throughout the country. It’s a great time for the Australian Spa Industry and we look forward to sharing with you new ideas and advancements.
The second thing that currently stands out to me in the industry is the challenges, troubleshooting and financial struggles that Spa operators deal with time and time again.
During my audits and training sessions with Spas over the past year, I’ve noticed that the challenges Spa operators often face are usually the same key issues from Spa to Spa. Generally, we have found that Spas operating with sub-standard procedures manuals are spending countless hours troubleshooting, problem solving and working in a stressful environment.
Mostly I find this begins with the communication and clarity surrounding the employment and expectations of team members. When we are clear and upfront about what is expected by each party through effective employment agreements, we can alleviate an untold amount of issues down the track.

A few years ago, when I developed a real understanding of how much this was affecting the bottom line and the enjoyment of running a Spa, I decided to offer the operating manuals that we had developed for The Dome Retreat, to all Spas.
Running our businesses by ‘the book’ has not only won us many awards, it has also made operating enjoyable and efficient rather than being a stressful experience.
Our templated systems aren’t difficult to implement and they can add 20% each year to the bottom line as well as easily double a Spa’s sale value.*
